GRAHAM GREENE : The Comedians. A novel

The Bodley Head, London, 1966

First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 313pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with the publisher's vibrant blue top edge stain. A scattering of very light spotting to the fore edge, else a fine copy in slightly rubbed and chafed dust wrapped, with several internally repaired edge-nicks. Publisher's new price label affixed over the original one printed to the base of the front flap. A novel set in Haiti under the rule of François 'Papa Doc' Duvalier. Duvalier was perhaps understandably unhappy with the novel and his Minister of Foreign Affairs produced a pamphlet in response which labelled Greene "A liar, a cretin, a stool-pigeon . unbalanced, sadistic, perverted . a perfect ignoramus . lying to his heart's content . the shame of proud and noble England . a spy . a drug addict . a torturer." Greene subsequently confessed that he always found the final epithet a little puzzling. Wobbe A48.. Book. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Very Good
