UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn. NFINE/FINE-.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, crisp, clean, matt,wrap-around green+black colour pictorial artwork illustration (an Aloe plant foliage) to a sage green background by Ivan Lapper, illustrated dw/dj,with white lettering to front and b/w lettering to spine; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present.A small (approx 10mm) closed tear to rear lower edge towards gutter's edge of spine/backstrip of dw/dj.Some miniscule bumping with reciprocal creasing to head of spine/ backstrip of the dw/dj.Top edges slightly discoloured through light dust-soiling but generally clean,fore-edges slightly brighter and clean too; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp- cornered, publisher's original plain green cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean plain white eps - small smudge to front pastedown excepted.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,5-313pp [paginated] includes author foreword,Pts I-III comprising 5,3 and 4 main chapters respectively, plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages, and 6pp blanks at the rear.
A really exceptional example with minimal detraction, particularly for a book of it's age and especially with a dw/dj with so few imperfections/faults.
'The Comedians' is Graham Greene's first novel in five years (then 1966).Like one of its predecessors,'The Quiet American' (see my book ID rja379210 for UK,8vo HB+dw/dj, 1st edn),it is a story about the committed and the uncommitted. The negro,Doctor Magiot,is committed. His last letter to Brown, who tells the story,is a statement and an appeal by the committed - by a man who has by his nature to share the terrible events of his time. But the Comedians have opted out. They play their parts - respectable or shady - in the foreground; they experience love-affairs rather than love; they have enthusiasms - like Mr Smith for his vegetarian centre - but not a faith; and if they die, they die, like Jones, by accident.
