Publisher's bright, original, plain dark blue cloth boards, three corner tips minimally curled, head+foot of spine/backstrip gently pushed, bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and blind-tooled publisher's colophon to rear, lower corner by foot of spine/backstrip,and plain white sets of endpapers with light off-setting and some light grubbing.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,3-247pp [paginated] includes Pts 1-4 comprising 5,3,2 and 3 chapters respectively; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, author's dedication with blank verso, epigrams(2) and individual Pts separator pages. Unusually, seems to be a particularly uncommon title of Greene's work. Visually the appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a better, higher grading overall. Against the intrigue and violence of Vietnam during the French war with the Vietminh,Alden Pyle,an idealistic young American,is sent to promote democracy,as his friend,Fowler,a cynical foreign correspondent, looks on.Fowler's mistress,a beautiful native girl, creates a catalyst for jealousy and competition between the men,and a cultural clash resulting in bloodshed and deep misgivings. Written in 1955 prior to the Vietnam conflict,'The Quiet American' foreshadows the events leading up to the Vietnam conflict. The novel has been filmed twice. The original 1958 Hollywood version, written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, inverted the theme of the novel, turning it instead, into an anti-communist tale instead of a cautionary story about American interventionism. However, the 2002 film version adaptation by Phillip Noyce, starring Michael Caine and Bredndan Fraser, was true to the book.Test-screened to positive audience reactions on September 10,2001,but the 9-11 event took place the next day,and audience ratings then declined with each subsequent screening.Miramax, reacting to criticism of its "unpatriotic" message, shelved the film for a year.IN 2019, the BBC News listed 'The Quiet American' on its list of the 100 most influential novels.
