Signed, "Howick." Original document with printed text and handwriting in black ink on beige paper. Paper has a "J. & M. Mills, 1830" watermark. Dated August 15, 1836 at the "War Office." 7 3/4" x 12 3/4." One page. Document is very clean and intact overall except for fold lines (perhaps original), light age toning, and a few wrinkles. Signature and the rest of the handwriting are still very clean and legible. A Very Good copy. An original document issued by the War Office and signed by Charles Grey as "Howick." In the document, Grey signs that the Paymaster General is to return a portion of treasury funds used by the "53rd Foot," also known as the 53rd Regiment of Foot. General Charles Grey (1804-1870) was a British army officer, politician, and secretary. He was one of the sons of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), the latter of whom was also known as Viscount Howick from 1806-1807, and Mary Ponsonby. Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894) was the younger Charles's brother. In 1820, Grey joined the British Army as a sub-lieutenant. He later commanded the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1833-1842. As a politician, Charles served as a member of the British House of Commons and the Executive Council and Special Council of Lower Canada. Notably, Charles also served as a private secretary to his father, to Prince Albert from 1849-1861, and to Queen Victoria from 1861 until his passing in 1870.. Manuscript.
