A book in English on Catharism is long overdue. In writing about the Cathars the author is not dealing with the misfortunes of an obscure sect persecuted out of existence seven centuries ago.Catharism was the mediaeval expression of one of the oldest and most influential philosophies known to man. When the Inquisition was organised to subdue the great heresy it was concerned with the repression of something infinitely more radical than the reformation in its potential capacity to transform and transcend the life of European man.
Catharism is,in its implications, amazingly contemporary. Those who regard it as ascetic and impossibly unworldly have missed its significance.A large proportion of advanced and creative contemporary thought is indubitably Cathar. The current and increasing interest in the esoteric is strongly impregnated with Catharism.
The author devotes the first fourteen chapters of his book to the history and beliefs of Catharism. These chapters are based on careful and unsentimental interpretation of available historical sources.
The contents of the last chapters of 'The Great Heresy' are totally different. In these he records the instruction he received directly from the discarnate entities described in his other books related to Catharism. These examples of truth by revelation are,as far as the author knows, unique. They are concerned with such subjects as reincarnation on other planets and of animals as men, auras, the creation of the world, the nature of alchemy and the healing power of jewels. Dr. Guirdham feels that the experiences which are the raw materials of his last chapters are analogous to those of the second century Gnostics.
