A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. A pamphlet advocating for the fair treatment of Asian Americans, namely Chinese and Japanese immigrants. Author Sidney L. Gulick lays out a compelling case in which he says the United States is not doing enough to protect Chinese and Japanese immigrants. Gulick writes first about Chinese immigrants and says American laws should have protected Chinese residents, but instead, there were double standards in these laws and peace-keeping treaties were broken. He points out incidents during the 1880s where racist mobs attacked, and even killed, Chinese immigrants. Gulick names some of the towns where these attacks happened, including Bloomfield, Redding, Boulder Creek, and Eureka in California. Gulick also speaks out against anti-Asian legislation such as the Scott Act (1888) and the Geary Act (1892), which targeted Chinese immigrants, and other laws that harmed Japanese residents. Gulick also discusses the hypocrisy of the term, "Yellow Peril" (which was commonly used in the U.S. at the time to vilify people of Asian descent), given the past occupations and grievances inflicted by Western and European powers against China and Japan. He briefly goes over the Boxer Rebellion and its ripple effect on the Russo-Japanese War. Gulick ultimately cautions that the mistreatment of Asian immigrants in the U.S. could lead to international wars. Sidney L. Gulick (1860-1945) was an American missionary, teacher, and author who worked to improve relations between Western and Eastern cultures in his time, namely those of the U.S. and of East Asian countries such as China and Japan. Gulick's specialty was the study of Japanese culture. During the early 1900s, when many Asian immigrants came to the U.S., Gulick was alarmed at the increasing resentment toward Asian Americans and subsequently campaigned against anti-Asian legislation and co-founded an organization, the Committee on World Friendship Among Children, that taught children the importance of racial equality.
