Rider Haggard novel Keeping has illustrated and comes from Blackie's Chosen Books.] FINE.No owner inscrptn and minus dw/dj.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original light blue cloth boards,with 3 separate,bright,crisp,blockedd 3 concentric squares design across top 1/3rd of front board.Outer squares outlined,middle square gilt filled.Bright,crisp,blocked gilt lettering and same squares design repeated vertically to spine/backstrip; with negligible shelf- wear or bumping to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present.A tiny 3/5ths" split/tear to front board's spine/backstrip's gutter's edge towards foot of same.Generally clean,plain white endpapers - with some off-set foxing to rear free endpaper,originally from the now missing, dw/dj's rear inner flap.Top edges coloured dusky pink,fore-edges generally bright and clean but with evidence of very faint thumbing and with a blue+white striped headband.Contents bright, tight,clean,solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, could appear unread apart from my own collation. UK,small 8vo HB,minus dw/dj,illustrated 1st edn thus,11-240pp [paginated] includes 20 chapters,a b/w map and 6 full page b/w illustrations all by Charles Keeping throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,note/potted biography on H[enry] Rider Haggard,contents list/table,and an introduction by Allan Quatermain. The first of the Allan Quatermain stories,2nd being 'SHE' - see my book ID rja1742 for an example of that title but in Esperanto - and the 3rd,the eponymous 'Allan Quatermain'. An unusual and uncommon item in Keeping's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the Charles Keeping canon. [Of the 2,000 1st edn copies: 1,000 copies were bound up in September 1885,and contained at the end Cassell & Co's catalogue of publications (eight leaves) dated August 1885; 500 copies were bound up in October 1885,and contained at the end of Cassell & Co.'s catalogue of publications (eight leaves),dated October 1885; and the final 500 sets of sheets were shipped to Cassell & Co.,New York,where they were bound and published in November 1885.] Charles William James Keeping (b.1924). Usually works as Charles Keeping.Born in Lambeth,London.Educated at the Frank Bryant School,Kennington,London.Served as a telegraphist in the Royal Navy (1943-46) before studying art at the Regent Street Polytecnic (1946-52),where he later became a visiting lecturer in drawing and lithography at Croydon College of Art (1962-78) and at Camberwell School of Art (from 1979).Illustrator,designer and writer of children's books and lithographer. Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal with 'Charlie, Charlotte and the Golden Canary'(1967) and 'The Highwayman' (1981),and of the Bratislava Biennale Golden Apple Award (1975), and prize winner in the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for 1972 and 1977.One of the best known illustrators of the 1960's and '70's, Keeping combines an individual drawing style and a feeling for design and structure with the ability to evoke atmosphere and create a convincing world of the imagination.He works in black or coloured ink,mostly on a fine Whatman or Hodgkinson 'bank note' paper and sometimes on plastic (Cobex).Two of his books,'Joseph's Yard' (1969) and 'Through the Window' (1970) have been made into television plays.
