Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) was an Irish-American author, editor, and journalist from Georgia. He also went by Joe Harris as an editor and journalist. Harris is perhaps best-known for creating the character of Uncle Remus and for his Uncle Remus folktales. Harris's adaptation of Br'er Rabbit has also left a lasting impression on the American literary canon. Most of Harris's Uncle Remus tales were based on African folklore which he had become well-acquainted with by spending numerous hours in the quarters of African-American slaves when he worked at the Turnwold Plantation under Joseph Addison Turner for Turner's newspaper, The Countryman. Harris became friends with some of the slaves including Uncle George Terrell, Old Harbert, and Aunt Crissy. Terrell and Harbert would become the inspiration for Uncle Remus. Also of note is Harris's twenty-four career at Henry W. Grady's newspaper, The Atlanta Constitution, where he became its assistant editor and lead editorial writer. He spent much of his life in Atlanta while working for this newspaper. Harris shared Grady's progressive vision of racial reconciliation in the Reconstruction-era South. Harris advocated for the education, voting rights, and equal treatment of African Americans. He worked for the Atlanta Constitution from 1876-1900. Afterward, Harris focused on writing novels and the occasional article for various publications.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
