Hemingway, Ernest : Italy, 1927 in The New Republic Magazine

The New Republic, Inc., New York, 1927

4to. Entire issue, May 18, 1927, in original wraps, small sticker at upper left showing issue date, small ink library stamp at upper edge, one small repair noted at spine tail, else issue is unusually intact, with none of the usual chipping given the cheap paper quality. Issue is, of course, brittle and prone to chipping; care must be exercised when handling. The first of the author's five contributions to New Republic, and the lone fiction piece, the others being reports on the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and 1938. This story would shortly appear in the author's collection, Men Without Women, Scribner's, 1927, under the title Che ti Dice la Patria? From the opening, "The road of the pass was hard and smooth and not yet dusty in the early morning. Below were the hills with oak and chestnut trees, and far away below was the sea. On the other side were snowy mountains. We came down from the pass through wooded country. There were bags of charcoal piled beside the road, and through the trees we saw charcoal burners' huts. It was Sunday and the road, rising and falling, but always dropping away from the altitude of the pass, went through the scrub woods and through villages." See Hanneman C298. Very scarce.. Magazine. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Soft cover
