UK,12mo HB,undated (nd.),reprint.[UK,1st edns were dated for the coming/following year date, whereas the US publisher (Scribner) dated the same issue with the actual year, erroneously giving the written impression of US precedence over UK publication! (In deference to Roger for correct info - thank you.)]This example,an undated, but an early reprint. With Bombay included in the Publisher's address, this would date the book at the earliest, circa 1901 or onwards - as the publisher opened that office/address in that year,1901.The practice by the British Museum of dating all books when first catalogued was most helpful. But the loss of records and books in the 1941 London bombing air raids of WW2 (which also destroyed Blackie's "50 Old Bailey" so common on Henty title pages) was an irreparable misfortune and loss. VG.No owner inscrptn to off-set foxed free white endpapers (front+rear) and slightly cleaner and brighter pastedowns,no dw/dj - if issued? Bright, crisp, and generally clean - with ubiquitous, but minimal bumping and rubbing to corners - publisher's original colour illustrated, decorated front board+spine/ backstrip, red cloth covered boards.Front board with colour printed decoration of a soldier/officer holding a sword, and raised left arm, standing on rocks with bright, cream ink printed title+author's name lettering to top edge of front board above the illustration.Though generally bright and clean, the spine/backstrip is slightly sunned/faded,to a standing figure of a soldier/officer,cream title+author letters faded but still discernible, brighter black ink printed publisher's name to foot of spine/backstrip.Rear board plain and without tooling, decoration or illustration, but with a small dent.Top edges heavily aged/toned and dust-soiled, fore- and bottom edges also aged/toned - but to a much lesser degree; contents generally bright, tight, clean - hardly any spotting/foxing to body of text - solid and sound apart from front hinge between
verso of title page and the preface opposite, which is cracked, though rear hinge intact. The forward obliques,i.e. /,in the following title page description, are used to indicate a blank space or line(s) between the preceding and following written words.Title page: Under Wellington's/Command/A Tale of the Peninsular War/By/G. "Mr Henty resumes the absorbing story of the Peninsular War,and carries it on as far as the battle of Salamanca. The Irish heroes' further adventures by land and sea will be found extremely entertaining, told as they are,in stimulating fashion.
Mr Henty offers several clever and humorous sketches of Irish character, and the book should prove not less
successful than its predecessors." - Daily Telegraph.
