Following the great success of her first book, 'The Cats Gallery of Art' (1990),the artist Susan Herbert now presents a cat's album of Victorian life, offering typical period scenes of an upstairs/downstairs household, with its dinner parties, musical evenings, grand balls, weddings and sewing bees.
Accompanying each of these charming vignettes are selections from a Victorian cat's diary, kept by the mother of the clan and describing the various activities, the joyous events, and the occasional trials of this extended family.
The book exudes the same sly humour and witty excellence of painting that brought Susan Herbert's gallery of art such an enthusiastic audience. These visual and verbal commentaries on the domestic scene of a bygone age, with cats as the endearing protagonists, should be even more widely appealing.
