Born in Latvia, Hillquit (1869-1933) and moved to New York City in 1886. He organized Jewish works in the city, and joined the Socialist Labor Party in the 1890s, which later became part of an amalgamated Socialist Party. He was a spokesperson and activist with the Party until his death. He had great facility in creating compromise and agreement, and wished to put socialist ideal into action through non-violent means.
