Much has been written about the heroic Royal Navy in two World wars, but little on
life afloat in the peaceful years between them.To write this splendid book, with some
sixty illustrations,Anthony Hogg has delved deeply into his journal, compulsory
for Midshipmen, and into his diaries kept for fun later until he was wounded in 1940.
Always interesting, frequently funny; at home; in Iceland, the Mediterranean or the West Indies, serving under five different Captains all made Admirals, this saga revels in the follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies of Navy life.
Two rare events are among the highlights.
Doing courses at the College in 1933 the author attended the magnificent Greenwich Night Pageant in the College grounds, with
2500 performers re-enacting great naval events nightly to a full stand of 10,000 people.By 1936 he had become a Lieutenant,
navigating the new destroyer Grafton, chosen to escort the yacht Nahlin cruising
with Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson from the Adriatic to Constantinople.
