It was founded by Frank Somers and based in San Francisco, California. Soon after the Argonaut's founding, Frank M. Pixley took over and helped turned it into a successful, highly-regarded political newspaper. In 1907, Alfred Holman purchased the newspaper company and was its editor and publisher until 1924. The Argonaut was known for its political commentary, strong views based in Americanism, and ability to exert political influence. However, the newspaper also included apolitical topics such as art, literature, drama, local events, and book reviews. The articles vary in length, but most are fairly brief at about one paragraph long. The following is a sampling of the articles contained in this volume: "The Crisis in China," "A Contrast: Mr. Wilson and Mr. Roosevelt," "Diaz and Mexico," "Europe and the War," "Hetch Hetchy Privileges Denied," "Horns Locked at Sacramento," "Immigration Restriction," "The Japanese Emperor," "The Newest Socialist," "The Recall in Oakland," "The Utah Strike," "The Woman's Federation," "The Bull-Moose Party," "Mr. Roosevelt's Remarks at the Lincoln Monument," "Alliance Between France and Russia," "The Camorra Trail," "The Character of the Late Empress of China," "Connection Between Sir Francis Drake and San Francisco," "The Crystal Palace," "Ellis Island Authorities," "Peruvian Missions," and "Women Rulers in India."
