Slight foxing in the bottom margin of the last few pages not affecting text. Mary J. Holmes (1825-1907) was an American novelist and short story writer. She was a very popular author; about two million of copies of her books were sold in her lifetime, a figure bested only by that of Harriet Beecher Stowe. The narratives of Holmes's books often centered upon domestic and rural life, but they also examined serious topics such as slavery and gender, class, and race relations.
