This is a charming travelogue about San Mateo County that was written by Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), an American author, philosopher, artist, and publisher. Hubbard founded the Roycroft Shops (also known as the Roycrofters) in 1895, a utopian community in East Aurora, New York dedicated to the arts and crafts. After Elbert's passing, his son, Bert, operated the Roycroft Shops until 1938. In his autobiographical account, Hubbard describes accidentally stumbling upon San Mateo County while on tour or en route for a tour with a professor and three students from Stanford University. Much of Hubbard's travelogue includes a brief retelling of his journey and praising comments about San Mateo County. Hubbard commends the county's park-like appearance, its many towns and features, its beaches, and its history related to Indigenous communities and Spanish explorers. Redwood City, Daly City, San Bruno, Millbrae, Hillsborough, Leslie, San Carlos, and Menlo Park also have brief mentions in Hubbard's travelogue.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
