Mr. Isbyam'spresent work was read in proof by two distinguishedauthors, representing, as it happened, two extremesof outlook. One is a strong empiricist of the oldschool, who sinks himself in solid reality and viewsthe transcendental with no small measure of intoler-ance. The other is one of those transcendentalists ofthe new school, who soar so readily outside the boundsof formal reason ; and he views the empirical withmarked resignation, it may be, in practice, but withvenom in principle.To both these readers, this work came as a shock.To the one, it was so transcendental as to be viewedwith the utmost disturbance ; to the other, it was of soI empirical a nature, so enswathed amid the red rags oflogic and the pretentious trappings of science, as to sinagainst all divine inspirings.
