A novel of Arabia by British writer Hammond Innes. It is the story of two men and their fight to save an oasis from the encroaching sands of the Empty Quarter.Colonel Whitaker is a legendary desert figure obsessed by oil; his natural son David is a tough from Cardiff docks who is wnted by the police and who escapes to Arabia to become a geologist. The great desert of the Empty Quarter and the tragic friction thta develops between father and son dominate the book.
The story is told by a Cardiff lawyer whose duties as executor take him - and the reader - to the Persian Gulf, into a world of sand and heat and desert politics where oil fans the flames of Bedouin feuds and watch-towers stand lone sentinels against armed raiders. Here hyenas pick the bones of men and camels dead in battle and the shifting sands cover everything as the wretched inhabitants flee a waterless osasis.
Hammond's story climax, with its account of the drawn-out agony of a young man trading his life for the sake of a gesture, for the only thing he'd ever believed in,is one of the best things he has ever written.
