Original billhead on beige paper with printed text and handwriting in black ink. Datelined January 7, 1868 [or 1865] in Olympia, Washington Territory (WT). The Washington Territory was founded in 1853 after splitting with the Oregon Territory and became the state of Washington in 1889. 8 1/2" x 4 3/4." Billhead is very clean and intact. Paper has two horizontal and vertical fold lines. Small closed tear in the upper-right corner and a tiny chip at the left edge the center horizontal fold line. The handwritten portions include the name of the buyer, the item(s) purchased, and the price of the item(s). There are four lines of items. The items purchased were raisins, pickles, vinegar, and several yards of some material. The buyer was Daniel J. Hubbard ("Mr. D. Hubbard" on billhead), a notable early western pioneer. The printed text reads, "[Buyer name] Bought of I. Lightner, Wholesale and Retail Dealer in Clothing, Dry Goods, Groceries, Provisions, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps, Hardware, Crockery, etc., etc." Also printed is "Payable in United States Gold Coin.".
