J. H. Shaffer : Original Billhead - J. H. Shaffer, Marysville, California

Original billhead on beige paper with printed text in black ink and handwriting in pencil. No date, circa 1890s (blank fill-in date of "189_"). Location is Marysville, California. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Billhead is clean and intact overall. Paper has some fold lines and wrinkling. A few tiny holes and chips, all about pinhole-sized, that barely affect handwriting. Upper-right corner is chipped, and there is a split coming in about halfway from the right edge to the center. The handwritten portions include the name of the customer, the item(s) purchased, the price of the item(s), and acknowledgment of the customer's payment. The customer was "Mr. M. Lynch." There are four lines of purchased items. Among the items are "Flour," "1 keg Syrup," and "Tobacco." There is a printed and illustrated letterhead that reads, "[Customer] Bought of J. H. Shaffer, Wholesale and Retail, Dealer in Groceries. Provisions, Fruits &c.; Odd Fellow Building, Cor. Third & D. Sts." Printed at the top is the following: "Call and see the Economy Coal Oil and Gasoline Can. J. H. Shaffer, Sole Agt. for Yuba Co." The Odd Fellow Building refers to the International Organization of Odd Fellows (IOOF), a Masonic organization that promotes recreational activities as well as ethics based on reciprocity and charity. The IOOF began as an fraternal organization in 1819 but began to admit women over the age of eighteen in 1894.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
