His interest began when he started teaching in the Northern Transvaal and collected insects in his spare time. To assemble the many new and interesting species of moths (Lepidoptera), he spent his holidays travelling in the veld on a donkey cart or sometimes with a wheelbarrow only. After he had become a lecturer he continued these studies and at his home in Gezina, Pretoria, built his own private laboratory which he equipped with insect cabinets he had made himself. ...
