He studied at the university in Liepzig; he became a preacher there in 1845, and later also preached at the Leopoldstadt and Seitenstetten synagogues in Vienna. He was a founder of the Kirchlicher Verein fuer alle Religionsbekenntnisse, an association that brought together the varying religions of Germany, and of the Beit ha-Midrash Academy, where Jewish scholars delivered lectures and which also published a periodical by the same name. More than 200 of Jellinek's sermons were published including in translation, and he also wrote books on topics such as apologetics, Kabbalah, and Talmudic language.
