Presentation inscription reads, 'Winifrid Lovel Jenkinson, Farway Rectory, Honiton, Devon. Given to her on her 16th Birthday in token of her birthplace in Natal and of her mother's visit to Zululand in 1889, Thomas B. Jenkinson.'Jenkinson, Cannon of Maritzburg from 1873-1879 reflects sympathetically on the distressed state of Zululand after the war. He recommends a form of indirect British rule, "I should advise the Governor of Zululand should have a personal acquaintance with the people, their language, manners and customs, ... that he should avoid taxation, if possible, and not allow alienation of land on any pretence. Zululand for the Zulus." Author's introduction.
