A history and collection of facsimile documents about the work of Richard E. Byrd's first Antarctica expedition of 1928-1930. Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) was an American naval officer, aviator, and polar explorer. He was part of five Antarctic expeditions between 1928 and 1956. Byrd took part in pioneering flights around the world and received numerous awards and recognitions for his military service and work as an explorer. Byrd's first Antarctic expedition included scientific surveys and flights over the South Pole. The expedition team traveled by ship, aircraft, snowshoe, snowmobile, and dog sled. Byrd was awarded the gold medal of the American Geographical Society for his successful first Antarctic expedition.
