Original color topographic map of the Trossachs district in Scotland. Map has varying shades of orange. An orange and white bar in the right margin indicates elevations or depths in feet. Dark orange lines show driving and cycling routes. No date, circa 1890s. 12 1/2" x 7 1/4." Map has vertical fold lines and a horizontal fold line, which may be original. Formerly in a book, a possible folding map. Map is very clean and intact except for a few wrinkles, slight age toning, and possible clipping limited to left margin. A Very Good copy. Map shows the Trossachs, a region of glens, woodlands, braes, and lochs to the east of the mountain, Ben Lomond. Cities, routes, and natural features are shown. Tiny trees indicate green spaces. Scale of distance in miles, neatline, and legend for routes included. Caption in bottom margin: "The contour lines on lochs show depths in fathoms." A map by John Bartholomew & Son, a mapmaking and publishing company that was founded by John Bartholomew (1805-1861) in 1826. John was succeeded by his son and grandson of the same name, John Bartholow (1831-1893) and John George Bartholomew (1860-1920). The company began as a publisher of maps and other printed materials such as checkbooks and election books. However, beginning around 1890, John Bartholomew & Son shifted its focus to maps and became well-known for its relief maps. Published by the famous publishing company, A. & C.
