Laid in is a letter from the editor / publisher to Betjeman's daughter Candida detailing the interesting background of the project ("The project was kept a secret from J.B. and the book was presented to him by Roger Pringle as a surprise one morning, with many of the poets involved also present, having arrived at his Radnor Walk house in a fleet of taxis, accompanied by bottles of champagne and smoked salmon sandwiches").
