Although accurate in the east, Melish’s depictions of the “Missouri Territory,” newly acquired from the Louisiana Purchase, is somewhat inaccurate: mountain systems and rivers are misplaced. Areas explored during the expeditions of Lewis and Clark contain notes of interest, such as the head of the Mississippi as well as the furthest point reached by Clark’s canoes from the Mississippi river.
