First Edition (first printing). A presentation copy, warmly inscribed by John Piper on the title page: "Kitty, with much love from John, May 1979" (the recipient is Katherine 'Kitty' West, née Church, and old artist friend of John and Myfanwy, and the first wife of the author of this monograph, Anthony West). 4to. 224pp. Maroon cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Illustrated with over 250 reproductions, thirty-three in glorious colour. Some moisture marking to the cloth, endpapers, and to the upper margin of most leaves, although only several preliminary and concluding leaves are seriously impacted. Some occasional pencilled notations in the text, presumably in Kitty Wests hand. A good copy in dust wrapper, with some considerable fading to the front and spine panels, a little edge-wear, and some internal moisture marking. Laid-in is a reproduction of Piper's 1941 ink and watercolour figure drawing of Kitty West and Myfanwy, posing by the fireside at Ecchinswell, which is now in the collection of The Tate Gallery. Newspaper obituary of Piper also laid-in. A nice presentation copy of one of the definitive Piper monographs, which, alas, is not in the best condition.. Book. Book Condition: Good.
