The proceeds from the sale of these souvenirs went to the Daily Mail fund for the benefit of the wives and children of the Reservists fighting in South Africa. Greenwall, 'Artists & Illustrators of the Anglo-Boer War', page 72, 'The Absent Minded Beggar' and/or 'A Gentleman in Khaki', Richard Caton Woodville's painting, based on the poem, appeared as a motif on all souvenir items sold in aid of the fund and performers such as Lillie Langtry, a former mistress of Kind Edward VII, paid the fund £100 for the privilege of reciting the poem to an audience. It is estimated that over £350,000 was raised from the copyright of 'A Gentleman in Khaki'.
