Original billhead on beige paper with printed text and handwriting in black ink. Datelined December 22[?], 1898 in Angels Camp, California. 6 1/4" x 8 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact. Paper has a few vertical and horizontal fold lines. A small closed tear at the top edge. Left edge slightly worn. The handwritten portions include the name of someone's initials at the top, a purchase on one line of the receipt and its price, and the handwritten names of three individuals, John Davey[?], J. H. Carley [?], and R. P. Walsh. The printed text reads, "To Angels Lodge No. 195, Knights of Pythias Dr." Knights of Pythias coat of arms to the left of the header. The Knights of Pythias is a secret society and international, non-sectarian fraternity. It was founded in 1864 by Justus H. Rathborne in Washington, D.C. and follows the three principles of friendship, charity, and benevolence. Its namesake comes from the Greek legend of Damon and Pythias. It was the first fraternity to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. In 2003, there were over 2,000 lodges around the world with over 50,000 members.
