His work while in his home country of Germany was regarded as too radical, and in 1869 he moved to Detroit, where he led a congreagation. He emerged as a national champion of Reform Judaism and in 1903 was appointed the president of Hebrew Union College. He contributed 300 articles to the Jewish Encylopedia (Temkin, EJ) .
