Aperture Foundation, New York City, NY, 2011

ISBN 1597111775

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 230 pages. New And Expanded Edition of the photographer's classic. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in this edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Second Printing and the Thames & Hudson Facsimile Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition Thus is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Josef Koudelka and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Josef Koudelka. Afterword Essay by Will Guy. Printed in quadrotone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper using all-new, high-resolution scans by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. By critical consensus (notably, John Gossage), it is vastly superior to all other previous editions in terms of its production values. In pristine-white DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Re-presents, in nothing less than a restorative and definitive edition, Josef Koudelka's "Cikani". Otherwise better-known as "Gypsies". His debut and masterpiece. "Rekindles the energy and astonishment of this foundational body of work by master photographer Josef Koudelka. Offers an expanded look at 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in then-Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. Revisits the artist's original intention for the work and is based on the maquette prepared in 1968 by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva. Koudelka intended to publish the work in Prague, but was forced to flee Czechoslovakia, landing eventually in Paris. In 1975, Robert Delpire, Aperture, and Koudelka collaborated to publish 'Gitans, la fin du voyage', a selection of 60 photographs taken in various settlements around East Slovakia" (Publisher's blurb). The book restores and incorporates 30 images that appear in published form for the very first time, accompanied by a new Essay by sociologist Will Guy. Except for the title itself, Guy restores the name these great people call themselves, "Roma", Gypsies being their marginalized/outsider-status appellation. Guy helps us understand their status as an oppressed (yet irrepressible) minority, a people who originally came from India and remain nomadic to this day. As such, they are exactly like our human ancestors. Constantly moving and never permanently settling down in one place are in their blood, making their presence in modern, stable societies destabilizing and well, unsettling, therefore deeply threatening. An absolute "must-have" title for Josef Koudelka collectors. This New And Expanded Edition of a great photography book is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the 2011 Aperture Foundation First Edition Thus/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Should NOT be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Second Printing and the Thames & Hudson Edition, which is an exact facsimile/replica of the Aperture Edition. Copies available online, especially those shrinkwrapped ones, are Later Printings. How do you know if a copy is the First Edition/First Printing if it is still shrinkwrapped? You do not. A rare copy thus. 109 plates and gatefolds. Three of Josef Koudelka's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Czech photographer of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSEF KOUDELKA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1597111775.
