Joseph Lane (1801-1881) was an American politician and military officer. He fought in the Mexican-American War. During the war, he first enlisted as an Indiana volunteer but quickly made his way up to the rank of brigadier general. In his political career, he served as the first Governor of Oregon Territory from 1849-1850 and in 1853, a delegate to the United States House of Representatives from Oregon Territory between 1851 and 1859, and a U.S. Senator from Oregon between 1859 and 1861. In the 1860 presidential election, the Democratic Party was split into the Northern Democratic Party and the Southern Democratic Party. The Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas as their candidate while the Southern Democrats nominated John C. Breckinridge. Lane was nominated as vice president and became Breckinridge's running mate. Lane's political career ended with the onset of the Civil War and his defeat in the election. His support for slavery and the Confederacy, views highly unpopular in Oregon, also led to the end of his career.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
