The Keiskammahoek District in the Ciskei, in the eastern part of the Union of South Africa, was selected for this intensive rural survey, which was an investigation into the physical environment and the social and economic conditions in an area of about 220 square miles with a population of about 18,000 persons, the vast majority of whom were Africans. The survey, which extended over the period 1947 to 1951, was directed by Professor Lindsay Robb, previously a research professor at Pretoria University. It was carried out by voluntary workers from the universities and by officers seconded from various government departments together with a small paid staff. ... This Native Reserve has been under European Administration for nearly a hundred years and the description of the prevailing conditions, of poverty, of mass emigration and disrupted families, and of the destruction of pasture and soil, is of vital importance to all who are interested in the social and economic advancement of the African peoples."
