Bear Island is situated to the north of North Cape,an area known as the wartime graveyard of the Arctic, where U-boats laid in wait for the Murmansk convoys of 'HMS Ulysses'.
MacLean's narrative is set aboard the charter ship 'Morning Rose' as it sails towards the Arctic island of the title. The weather is appalling: the film crew fall ill, some even die.But nobody ever dies from seasickness. There is a murderer aboard.
MacLean's last sortie to the Arctic, for a plot. The novel was the basis for the 1980 movie featuring Donald Sutherland,Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Widmark.
