Original publisher's black and white map of "Ancienne Ethiopie" (Ancient Ethiopia) that shows most of Africa up to Egypt in the north and Libya to the north and west. Madagascar is labeled "Isle Menuthias." The Arabian Gulf and part of Asia are also shown to the northeast. This is a beautiful map that shows major towns along with natural geographic features such as rivers, mountains, and seas. ("Ocean Meridional" marks the southern boundary of the map.) No date, circa 1683-1719. Map with margins measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/4"; actual map area measures 4 3/8" x 6." Map is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. Axes of latitude and longitude also included. The front is labeled as Page "219"; the back is Page "220." On the back is a brief list of the principal Ethiopian tribes. Text is in French. Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. Mallet began his career a soldier under King Louis XIV and also served under the King of Portugal. With his mathematics and military engineering background, Mallet was appointed as teacher of mathematics at the court of King Louis XIV. The map and text come from Mallet's atlas, Description de l'Univers, which includes maps from around the world with accompanying descriptions of the local people and culture.
