Original publisher's black and white map of "Moscovie" (Moscow) that shows various countries and regions such as Norway, Lapland, Sweden, and Poland to the west; Siberia, Russia, and the Tartary to the east; France and Moldova roughly center; and Georgia to the south. This is a beautiful map that shows major towns along with natural geographic features such as rivers, mountains, and seas. ("Ocean Septentrional" and the White Sea is shown to the north; the Caspian Sea and Black Sea to the south.) No date, circa 1683-1719. Map with margins measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/4"; actual map area measures 4 1/2" x 5 3/4." Map is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. Axes of latitude and longitude also included. The front is labeled as Page "69"; the back is Page "70." On the back are brief descriptions of the different locales, people, and cultures. Text is in French. Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. Mallet began his career a soldier under King Louis XIV and also served under the King of Portugal. With his mathematics and military engineering background, Mallet was appointed as teacher of mathematics at the court of King Louis XIV. The map and text come from Mallet's atlas, Description de l'Univers, which includes maps from around the world with accompanying descriptions of the local people and culture. The atlas was first published in 1683 and had later editions until 1719. There are two copies of this map available at $50.00 each.
