The South African athletes Kenneth McArthur and Chris Gitsham won the gold and silver medals respectively. McArthur crossing the finishing line is illustrated on the front cover and there are other photographs of him and Gitsham during and after the race. Standard Encylopedia of South Africa, volume 8, page 326, 'The South African team of nineteen members achieved remarkable success in Stockholm. The only two South Africans in the marathon field of 86 competitors, K.K. McArthur and Chris Gitsham, won the gold and silver medals respectively. The distance was 40,200 metres, about 2 kilometres less than the standard marathon. McArthur, a strongly built policeman, won in 2 hours and 36 minutes and 54.8 seconds; and Gitsham, a miner, finished close behind him in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 52 seconds. The race was run in great heat and one competitor, Lazaro of Portugal, collapsed and died in hospital the following day.'
