Meade [1844-1914] was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith,a prolific writer of girls' stories and not generally known, crime and sci-fi novels too.Writing from the age of 17,and in her lifetime, she produced over 300 books, being so prolific that no fewer than eleven new titles under her byline appeared in the first few years after her death. Lewis Christopher Edward Baumer (1870- 1963).Worked as Lewis Baumer.Born and brought up in St. John's Wood,London. Encouraged by his parents to take up art, he attended St. John's Wood Art School, the South Kensington Schools and the Royal Academy Schools. He painted flowers and portraits of women and children in watercolour, pastel and oil; worked in b/w and made etchings. From the 1920s he concentrated on drawing for 'Punch' - a satirical/humour periodical, and other magazines;'The Graphic','The Idler','The Pall Mall Magazine','The Sketch' and 'The Strand Magazine' amongst others. R G G Price wrote of his 'Punch' cartoons that 'he was in a way the leader and certainly the most popular of the social commentators, using "social" in the old rather than the new sense'. In his book illustrations,as in his other work,'bright, young things' predominated - charming, effervescent, weightless creatures, depicted with Baumer's characteristically light touch.
