The first edition (first printing) with these illustrations, which comprise twelve colour plates of erotic drawings, plus a further nine black and white decorations in the text and a final tailpiece drawing. 8vo. 213pp. Black cloth lettered in red at the spine and upper board. With head and tail bands and a ribbon place-marker. Four tiny pinpricks of spotting to the top edge, else a fine copy in dust wrapper, with some fading to the publisher's red spine panel colouring and just a trace of further fading to the front panel. A two-page unaccredited foreword precedes twenty-eight anonymous letters detailing a menu of erotic encounters in Paris. First published in 1873 and apparently limited to just 150 copies, it is "an early blueprint for the formulaic written pornography . however the overblown language has a certain charm" - foreword..
