Letter handwritten in black ink on beige paper. Datelined January 28, 1878 in Washington, D.C. 5 3/8" x 6 1/4." One page. Signature, handwriting, and paper are very clean and intact. Letter in addressed to William A. Moore and signed by U. S. Navy Rear Admiral Edward Middleton (1810-1883). Middleton was from South Carolina and joined the USS Decatur in1854 as executive officer. For much of his career, he was stationed in the Pacific Northwest under the Navy and chose to stay with the Union during the Civil War. Middleton also fought in the one-day Battle of Seattle (January 26, 1856), which was part of the Yakima War and began when Native Americans attacked the settlement of Seattle in Washington Territory. Middleton was promoted to Commander that same day. This is a rare autograph of a U.S. military officer who served in the only active federal military force in Seattle. The letter reads, "223 A St. S. E., Washington, D.C., 23 Jan. 1878. William A. Moore, Esq., Hartford, Conn. Dear Sir, In compliance with your request, I herewith enclose two cards. At some future time I will endeavor to send any duplicated I may have of the description to which you refer. Very respecfully, your obdt. srvt. [obedient servant], Edward Middleton, R.
