One of the author's best-known and acclaimed satirical, comic novels, following on from her earlier novel 'The Pursuit of Love.' True 1st edns are very scarce and expensive,so an opportunity to acquire a superb and excellent, alternative, aesthetic example(s) of her notable titles.
Set in roughly the same time and place as her earlier novel 'The Pursuit of Love.' (1945) it delves into British aristocratic society between the wars with similarly hilarious results. Against a background of privilege, wealth, and taste,it tells the story of Polly Montdore,an heiress whose unconventional choice of husband not only shocks her own family, but also provides scandal enough to occupy all of the country-house set to which she belongs.
Told by her friend Fanny, the sensible narrator of many of Mitford's novels,Polly's story expands to become a larger commentary on the comic and tragic elements inherent within society life.Light and witty in tone, the novel describes what would usually appear to be an ordinary round of social engagements in a world which the ordinary is a surprisingly rare phenomenon,Mitford's characters often verge on the bizarre; "Uncle Matthew",modelled on the author's father, typifies the eccentric aristocrat, while the insufferable Lady Montdore, who undergoes a hilariously drawn affair with Canadian nephew and arch-aesthete Cedric, remains a cutting portrait of the domineering but gullible matriach.
Mitford's novels, like those of Jane Austen, focus on the small social manoeuverings of an exclusive family and their "set"; like Austen, she uses fond but mocking satire to gently send up the family, even while encouraging the reader to care about its fortunes.
The Folio Society’s success is due to publishing books with exceptional typography, illustrations, paper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic texts, using skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books in both fiction and non-fiction fields. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions.
Roland Pym (b. July 14 1910,d. Jan 12 2006) born Cheeveley,Newmarket, was the son of Sir Charles Pym,a professional soldier, landowner and chairman of Kent County Council. He was brought up at Foxwold, the family home at Brasted Chart, where he lived for most of his life.
Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art,where he was a contemporary of Osbert Lancaster. Here, he won a competition for his first commission,a mural at Lord's pavilion.
Served in the Eighth Army in the desert during WW2.Principally a mural painter,he spent five years painting the grand saloon at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, and also executed murals, for example at Buckland Abbey,Devon, for Lady Astor, The Maritime Museum,London, the Guinness Brewery, Dublin and the Dorchester Hotel,London.
He was a theatre designer, book illustrator, landscape artist and muralist whose elegant romanticism evoked memories of Rex Whistler, though Pym claimed this reflected a similar approach rather than discipleship. He was also a stage designer (eight London productions during the 1960s,a painter of landscapes and conversation pieces, and a designer of mosaics.
As a book illustrator, mainly for children,he worked in pen and nk and watercolour (b/w,two colours or full colour),reviving in a sketchy style the picturesque formality of early Victorian illustrations. His books include three peepshows ('Cinderella','Beauty and the Beast',and 'Sleeping Beauty') designed like model theatres.
Pym enjoyed a fruitful career celebrating fashionable London life as well as rural well-being,hinting at the melancholy that can underlie country life.In later years he was perhaps most widely known for the striking black-and-white book illustrations that he produced for Edith Sitwell's 'English Eccentrics',Nancy Mitford's 'Pursuit of Love' and 'Love in a Cold Climate' and Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair',for which he also made colour plates.
Probably his greatest achievement as a book illustrator (he had a total of 60 to his name) came in his later life, when Joe Whitlock Blundell at the Folio Society commissioned Pym for these two Nancy Mitford iconic novels.
