"Reprinted from the Indiana Magazine of History, XLI, No. 1, March, 1945." A unique analysis of funeral sermons given in Northern churches on the occasion of Lincoln's assassination. Author Jay Monaghan delves into the nature of these sermons (categorizing them as either "vindictive" or "tolerant" toward the South), the motivations behind how the sermons were presented, and the content and messages of said sermons. For his research, Monaghan consulted a pool of 364 printed sermons (it was customary for sermons to be printed for exceptional events, in this case, Lincoln's assassination). An example of Monaghan's findings discusses how the level of vindictiveness appeared to vary by religious denomination. Specifically, he found that most sermons (from the sample pool) given at Unitarian, Lutheran, Congregational, and Presbyterian churches were vindictive toward the South; the number of sermons from Episcopalian, Methodist, and Baptist churches were about evenly split between being vindictive and tolerant; and Hebrew, Catholic, and Quaker churches were generally silent on the matter. However, he is quick to note that the sample pool may have been too small to arrive to accurate percentages. Monaghan also notes that while there was a high percentage of "vindictive" sermons immediately after Lincoln's passing, the number decreased in following weeks. Monaghan's essay is concise but addresses many other points in addition to these ones about Lincoln's funeral sermons.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
