Toward the end of the year 1911,six months after the author received his Bachelor's Degree, his friend Dr.Frederic A. Lucas, then Director of the American Museum of Natural History, spoke of the opportunity of voyaging to the edge of Antarctica in a new Bedford whaling and sealing vessel. The author was planning to be married in June, 1912 and had not considered himself eligible for such a cruise.Informing his fiancee of the conversation, she replied with a telegram suggesting they get married immediately so as to have several months together before his departure, and the trip would launch his career. They married on February 17,1912,and on May 25 departed by steamer for the Lesser Antilles in company with Captain B.D. Cleveland, master of the brig 'Daisy' and his wife. Following a memorable stay at Barbados, where the whaler had made port after a year's cruise under command of another caotain, they all boarded the 'Daisy' and voyaged to Dominica. This point is the opening of his log.Foremost among his jobs was the writing of records of day-to-day experiences in a logbook kept for his wife and also in a separate set of scientific notebooks. The substance of many of these entries has long since been published in 67 different articles and in a two-volume book entitled 'Oceanic Birds of South America (1936).But nothing of the human aspect of the long voyage - of how 34 men lived together, cooped up in a sailing craft of 383 tons net - has ever been told.
