Timmy Murphy's story is not just about a young man who pursued his dream and fulfilled it.It is not just about a boy, blessed with a rare talent for riding horses, who stumbled his way towards the very top of hs profession. This is a story about anticipation, frustration, alcoholism, despair, realisation, reconciliation and, ultimately, redemption.
It looked all over for Murphy when the cell door closed behind him at Wormwood Scrubs on July 23rd,2002.The years spent slowly, painstakingly, making his way in the hard-knock life that is the world of horse racing had all been for nothing. All blown away in one moment of alcohol-induced madness.
His account of his time inside is frighteningly stark. The regret, the fear, the shame, the appreciation of liberty. He tells of the people who helped him cope, both inside the walls and outside, and the letters that kept him going from day to day.He tells of starting all over again with his reputation in tatters and nothing but his extraordinary talent intact. And he tells of the remarkable chain of events that led him to landing one of the top jobs in National Hunt racing.
In 'Riding the Storm',Murphy tells his story with a rare openess that is at once both refreshing and foreboding. He relays it with the frankness of one who knows what it is like to stare into the abyss and return. He has recognised his demons, and is dealing with them.Every day he is dealing with them.Every day he rides with those demons on his back.
Timmy Murphy is one of the most talented racehorse riders of his generation,The son of a stud groom,he spent his early days riding his pony around Lady Clague's Newberry Stud in Co. Kildare. After spells with Noel Chance,Dermot Weld,Michael Halford and Michael Hourigan in Ireland,he moved to England where he has ridden for Kim Bailey,Jim Old,Mark Pitman and Paul Nicholls.
Murphy has won the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Paddy Power Gold Cup twice. He has also ridden the winners of countless other big races including the Arkle Trophy and the Irish Grand National. His horsemanship skills were probably seen at their best, however, when he cajoled Smarty around Aintree to finish second to Red Marauder in the 2001 Grand National mud-bath, when only four horses completed the course.
Murphy is the consummate horseman. His talent, his balance and his riding brain have drawn accolades from some of the greatest authorities in the world of National Hunt racing. In his current role as retained rider to champion owner David Johnson,he has the forum and the firepower to showcase those talents.
Timmy Murphy was assisted in the writing of this book by Donn McClean.Donn is the bright young star amongst Irish racing writers.A former winner of the Martin Mills Award,he is currently (then 2006) chief feature writer for 'The Irish Field' and racing writer for The Sunday Times in Ireland. In 2005 he assisted Jessica Harrington while her bestselling book on Moscow Flyer, also published by Highdown.
