MURRAY, J[ohn]. A SYSTEM OF MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY. WITH NOTES BY N. CHAPMAN, M.D., Professor of Materia Medica in the University of Pennsylvania. IN TWO VOLUMES. VOL. I[& II]. Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Dobson, at the Stone House, ... William Fry, Printer, 1815. First American edition of Murray's SYSTEM (London, 1810), but the first edition with Chapman's NOTES. Two octavo volumes: [viii],399; iv,384 pp.. Contemporary leather bindings sewn into mid 19th centurey and surprisingly appealing protective leather coverings (something like a dust jacket) with cut-out windows on the spines that reveal the spine labels below. The leather coverings are worn and scuffed but the bindings are sound. Text is mostly clean but for some intermittent light to moderate foxing, occasional ink spotting, and one marginal note (II: p. 289). One leaf (2K2) has a 1" closed tear. Early ink ownership (Robert P. Church) on ffep of each volume. Ex library, with only a few marks: each volume has a small inkstamp on t.p. and page 1, and a small label on recto of rfep.; no external matks. John Murray (1778-1820), a physician and chemist who taught chemistry, physics, pharmacy, and materia medica in London and Edinburgh, prepared this text to accompany his lectures. It was first published at London in 1810, replacing his earlier work ELEMENTS OF MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY (1804). For this first American edition of the work, the noted professor of materia medica at the University of Pennsylvania, and the first president of the American Medical Association, Nathaniel Chapman (1780-1853), adapted it as a textbook for his lectures and added his notes. Chapman states in his preface to Volume I that Murray's text presents overall "a very correct view of the existing state of the science," though he does not always entirely agree with him. Chapman quickly adds that these "differences of opinion" are "trivial" and are explained by him in his notes. (Austin 1353; Heirs to Hippocrates 1333; Shaw & Shoemaker 35340). Rare.
