Mendelssohn 2.98. 'A full account of the campaign by a war correspondent who was well acquainted with the country, and had a good knowledge of the natives and their language and customs. The author traverses the statement so often made that Sir Bartle Frere "caused the war", and maintains that the difficulty which culminated in the hostilities had existed a quarter of a century before the High Commissioner arrived in South Africa, and that later on it became abundantly evident that Cetywayo had been actively preparing for war.'
