Signed, "Bernard O'Kane." Copied Letter of Recommendation with an additional note signed and inscribed by Bernard O'Kane. Letter and note are handwritten in black ink on beige lined paper. O'Kane's note appears on the same page as the rest of the letter. Beige paper envelope included with the following handwritten on front in black ink: "E. H. Kinsley, Esq., Present." Datelined August 1, 1876 in Boston, Massachusetts. 5 1/2" x 9." Two pages (one leaf folded in half and written on two sides). Letter is virtually pristine and intact except for a few fold lines (perhaps original), minuscule age toning, a few small wrinkles, and a small spot of red ink on back. Envelope is clean and intact overall but has slight darkening, a few wrinkles, and streaks of red ink on front. A Near Fine letter with a Very Good envelope. This is a copied Letter of Recommendation for Bernard O'Kane by Franklin Williams, a Custom House official. The letter was possibly written on the occasion of a career opportunity for O'Kane within the Republican Party. Williams identifies O'Kane as having worked as "Inspector in the Custom House, a member of the State Police, and a patrolman on the city police" and commends his character, intelligence, and ability. Williams remarks further how "[O'Kane] had the confidence of such men as Gov. Andrew, Judge Russell, Gov. Rice, and many other prominent gentlemen of the Republican Party ...." The letter bears the copied signature of Williams which appears as "Franklin Williams." Williams's signature is attested to by a copied signature of Charles R. Train, the State Attorney General, which appears as "Chas. R. Train." At the bottom of Page 2 is a note handwritten and signed by O'Kane which reads, "N. B., Mr. Williams is well known as an Officer in the Custom House, with whom I have cooperated, politically, many years. Bernard O'Kane.". Manuscript.
