Few biographies have caught more of the spirit and colour of the age of Charles II than this life of Sir Robert Holmes. Adventurous, energetic, extravagant, combative and unscrupulous,he first attracted the attention of Prince Rupert as a young cavalry officer in the Civil War.As a Royalist exile,he accompanied the Prince first into the French service and then,in one of the strangest and most romantic episodes in naval history,on a cruise that carried the Royalist colours,no longer flying in England,to Portugal, the Mediterranean,West Africa and the West Indies. After Charles II's Restoration,Holmes twice commanded naval expeditions to the Gambia and the Gold Coast where his bold and thrusting policy was,in the opinion of many, the main cause of the Second Dutch War.In the fierce and furious actions that followed,Holmes won a high reputation for courage and skill, destroying,in perhaps the most successful single feat of arms of the century,a great part of the Dutch merchant marine at a cost of hardly a dozen casualties. This was the period that saw the founding of a modern,professional,whole-time Navy. Pepys, the greatest naval administrator in our history, was the architect of a service that for three hundred years has been the symbol of English power and the support of English policy. For thirty years Pepys and Holmes intrigued, manoeuvered, and quarrelled over naval matters, ending with a respect, perhaps even a kindness, for each other. But conflict, whether with the enemy or with brother officers, was the keynote of Holmes's long and fascinating career. To follow it is to see the Navy of the Restoration from an unusual angle and to feel the inexhaustible vitality and gusto of the age.
