(MacHenry). The leader of German neurology during the latter part of the nineteenth century was Hermann Oppenheim (1858/1919), who began his neurological career as an assistant of Westphal at the Charité in Berlin. Oppenheim studied all aspects of neurology and psychiatry, making tremendous contributions to both fields. In this way he actively enhanced the development of modern neurology of the twentieth century. Oppenheim set forth an original description of amyotonia congenita (Oppenheim's disease) and coined the term dystonia musculorum deformans. His interest in neurosurgery and brain tumors led him in 1890 to diagnose the first brain tumor that was surgically removed. Oppenheim's text-book, a landmark in neurology, passed through seven german editions. With each separate disease entity in this work, Oppenheim gives references to the previous literature, making it a valuable reference source for neurological disease for physicians at that time".
